What inspired the Magic-RR project and what positive transformation does it aim to bring to Europe’s Research Reactors?

Magic-RR was inspired by real operational challenges in European research reactors - especially gaps in understanding irradiation damage and corrosion in aluminium components. With many reactors operating beyond 60 years, ensuring their continued safe operation (CSO) is critical.

Magic-RR aims to transform reactor safety by closing data gaps, improving understanding of material ageing, and enabling longer, safer operation of existing research reactors across Europe.

How is Magic-RR advancing our understanding of irradiation-induced degradation and corrosion in aluminium alloys?

Magic-RR studies a unique set of highly irradiated aluminium alloys from multiple reactors and fluence levels, combining advanced techniques like SEM, TEM, APT, EIS with mechanical testing.

This integrated approach links microstructural changes to mechanical performance and corrosion behaviour, helping to uncover how irradiation (e.g. Si formation due to transmutation) and corrosion degrade materials - and how to prevent it.

Magic-RR is working on sub-size specimen technology for reactor surveillance. How could this innovation improve monitoring and long-term confidence in reactor operation?

Many ageing reactors lack sufficient surveillance material for long-term monitoring.

Magic-RR introduces validated sub-size specimen methods, allowing reuse of small or broken samples to continue tracking material degradation.

This means more efficient surveillance, extended monitoring capability, and greater confidence in long-term reactor safety.

How do improved predictive models and enhanced ageing management strategies support smarter, data-driven operation of Research Reactors?

Currently, there are no physics-based predictive models for irradiation damage in aluminium reactor materials.

Magic-RR develops multi-scale models that connect microstructural changes to structural performance, enabling prediction at high fluence levels.

Combined with shared best practices in ageing management supports harmonised approaches, and safer long-term operation across Europe.

What makes the collaboration between international partners particularly valuable in Magic-RR?

The collaboration between international partners in Magic-RR enables complementary experimental research on a unique set of irradiated materials distributed across partners, helping to address key research questions on irradiation damage, corrosion, and structural integrity of research reactor materials. In addition, it brings together reactor operators, research institutes, and universities to compare national safety practices, codes, and ageing management approaches, identify gaps, and provide recommendations to develop harmonised European guidelines.

How will Magic-RR contribute to advancing nuclear education and supporting Europe’s long-term leadership in nuclear science?

Magic-RR actively trains the next generation through hands-on experimental work, modelling research, and international collaboration.

With dedicated workshops and knowledge transfer activities, the project helps build long-term expertise and sustain Europe’s leadership in nuclear science and technology.
