About
The Magic-RR project (2024-2028) is a four-year Euratom initiative that unites 11 expert partners
from across the world. This collaborative research is focused on extending the safe operational
life of Europe’s ageing Research Reactors (RRs), which play an essential role in nuclear
research, the production of medical isotopes, and advanced education in nuclear technology.
As many RRs have been in operation for over 60 years, addressing the challenges posed by ageing
is critical. Magic-RR tackles these issues by understanding material degradation and
corrosion in aluminium alloys, developing better models to predict material
behaviour, testing and validating sub-size
specimen technology for reactor surveillance, sharing knowledge and best practices within
the RR community, and
improving ageing management to support
their continued safe operation.
Through these efforts, the project aims to safeguard these indispensable infrastructures and
support Europe’s leadership in nuclear science for future generations.
